Layering Weekend: Orly – Fowl Play over Sinful Colors – Amethyst

I knew Orly – Fowl Play was going to be the hot color for fall, and when I grabbed the last one at Ulta, I was suuuper excited.  For one, it’s part of their Birds of a Feather collection, and all the sports teams that I root for’s mascots are birds (Orioles, Ravens, Capitals).   Moreover it’s supposed to be PURPLE based (of course) so the potential for a Ravens manicure is there.  Not to mention, the glitter and duochrome flakies definitely don’t hurt.

1 coat Seche Rebuild (base)
2 coats Sinful Colors – Amethyst
1 coat Orly – Fowl Play
1 coat Seche Vite (top coat)

Much, much, MUCH more under the cut. (Warning: picture heavy!)

To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t terribly impressed with Fowl Play by itself.  I think it’s because it NEEDS MOAR PURPLE and it looks like  a weird, dark, weird blob of flakie weirdness.  I didn’t really know what to think.  I also had sky high expectations, so yeah, they were not met.  I mean it’s nice- but by itself, it isn’t hottest-color-for-fall nice.  I mean, after two coats, you can’t even tell it’s supposed to be purple!  Also, the formula is thick.  You need a few drops of nail polish thinner to thin it out to make the application easier.

Orly - Fowl Play, by itself, 2 coats

I decided I was determined to love this and all I needed to do was layer it over a nice purple.

 Enter Sinful Colors – Amethyst…

Sinful Colors - Amethyst, 2 coats

Amethyst is beautiful.  It reminds me a bit of OPI’s Funky Dunkey which I do not have, but it’s just a creme-y, fairly obnoxious purple.  Which means it’s amazing!  Color, application, etc, was on point in 2 coats.  And when you layer 1 coat of Orly – Fowl Play over it, you get this…

(Yes, I realize these are all pretty much the same picture, but we had a little photo shoot)

You want me.

If you couldn’t tell, I absolutely love it.  It reminds me of the Baltimore Ravens due to the purpleness and when the flakies duochrome to orange, it reminds me of the Baltimore Orioles.  Fantastic!  I can’t wait to rock this more in the fall when the Ravens play.   Besides the nails, just look at the BOTTLE, it really is lovely.

In conclusion, if you plan on wearing Fowl Play by itself, I don’t think it’s worth the search.  But if you want to layer it over a purple (or some other color you may like), this is definitely the It color for fall:)

  1. Good call on the layering. When I saw this on it’s own over at DV, I couldn’t really understand why you wanted this SO BAD. Got it now! May keep an eye out for it myself…

Also, Go Amethyst for getting a lot of play this weekend!, I love it!
